46. „Andrer Leuten Fehler sind angenehme Lehrer.” (I’m not sure of the wording on this one.) (“The mistakes of others are precious instructors.”)

The mistakes of others are pleasant teachers, because they suffer and we get instruction from them.

47. Wie ist dein Wettkampf gegangen?“

Sehr gut. Bald lag er oben, bald lag ich unten.“

“How did your wrestling match go?”

“It went very well. Sometimes he was on top

and sometimes I was on the bottom.”

(This was one my father’s jokes.)

48. (Another one:) A student comes into his dorm room, while the other is already in bed.

„Du, schloppst Du?“

„Nein, ich schlopp nicht.“

„Kannst Du mir ein Dollar Pumpen?“

„Nein, nein. Ich schlopp.“

“Hey, are you sleeping?“

“No, I’m not.“

“Can you lend me a dollar?“

“No, no, I’m sleeping!“

49. A beggar has a sign saying,

“Please help me. I’m deaf.”

A fellow, putting something into his cup, asks,

“How long is it you’ve been deaf?”

“Since my birth.” He answers. „Seid meiner Geburt.“

Family Sayings, mostly my Father’s 9/23/2008

Some of my sisters and brothers have helped me with these sayings. That gave me a number of them more.

Here is one that is corrected:

16. „Wenn es dem Esel zu gut geht, dann geht er auf das Eis und bricht ein Bein.” (”If things go too well for a donkey, it goes skating on ice and breaks a leg.“)

Here are six more:

38. „Du hast kein Sitzefleisch!“ (How to translate that? “You have no flesh to sit on!”Father would say this when we squirmed on a chair and could not remain still and seated.

39. „Ich muss mal gehen wo der Kaiser selbst zu Fuss geht.“ (“I have to go, where the kaiser himself has to walk and do it himself,“) that is, go to the bathroom.

40. My father would stroke his mustache and say, „Nur eine Kleinigkeit!” (“Just a detail!”) I’m not sure what he meant by it.

41. „Noch einen Spatenstich!“ (“Dig one spade more!“) My father always said this when my youngest brother was digging the garden and he didn’t dig a full row.

42. „Acht Tage Schwanheim!“ (“Eight days of Schwanheim!“) Whenever we did not like our food and complained or did not eat it all, someone would say that. We starved so much in that UNRA camp in Schwanheim, that baby James died, and we would eat anything we could get our hands on. I remember eating apple peals thrown into a hole behind the guard house at the entrance of the camp.

43. „Nichts ist schwerer zu ertragen als eine Reihe von guten Tagen.“ (“Nothing is harder to endure than a series of good days.”) This saying my father said often. It’s a little like Lake Woebegone.

Two more, Sept. 27, 2008. They keep “popping” up in my head. My brain keeps “fathering” them.

44. „Studenten Jahren sind keine Herre Jarhen.“ (“Student years are not the years of Lords.”) My father said this to emphasize that being a student was hard work, drudgery, poverty, slavery. In graduate school they said, “If you live like a lawyer when you are a student, then you’ll live like a student when you’re a lawyer.” That referred to taking out student loans. What happens if you take out such loans and you remain unemployed? Sigh!

45. „Ich bin ein geplagter Eheman!“ (“I am a tormented husband!“) When my father had to do housework or deal with criticism from my mother. I say this to myself when I do the dishes.

Pastor Leslie C. Schulz, D.D. as the Keynote Speaker of the Inner City Conference in Manhattan, June 24-26, 1985

When I helped organize an inner-city conference back in 1984, I proposed Pastor Les Schulz of Cincinnati as the keynote speaker. He was very inspiring. I introduced our St. Paul’s Lutheran Church’s ministry to the mentally challenged that was overwhelming us at that time. The conference became crucial to my conviction  that  the church had to get involved not only in the ministry to the poor, but also to the mentally challenged.  Thus my  lecture  topic:  “Luther’s In-depth  Theology,  Self Psychology, and the Possibility of a Lutheran Therapy”  that I gave at  Gettysburg Seminary, October 29, 2008. I did not intend a reduction of Luther’s theology to psychology, of course, but that his theology also contained a psychological dimension.  I also submit that Luther’s theology is therapeutic, because Luther understands the struggles of the psyche in a very profound way.

In the conference I had the honor of introducing Les Schulz:

Perhaps in introducing Pastor Leslie C. Schulz, that is, Dr. Schulz, I should read what I wrote to Pastor Heinemeier about him. But I fear that might take too long. In a biographical way, we can mention that he comes from Texas, was in the Navy, graduated from Texas Lutheran  College in 1949, and received a Bachelor of Divinity from Hamma School of  Theology in Wittenberg University in 1954. After a short call in Logansport, Indiana, he was called to the church of his aspirations, First English Lutheran Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. That was in 1956 and he served there in the Basin Area of Cincinnati ever since; almost 30 years on those steaming hot streets. In 1974 he was honored by Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio with a doctor of divinity degree.

Les Schulz goes way back in the history of inner-city ministry and he is still working the same streets. Back in the late sixties, I was attending Hamma and his name was floating around with that of Cook in Chicago and a Cochran in Philadelphia. On July 15, 1984 he celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of his ordination. He has been a scholar in residence for Trinity Seminary in Columbus, Ohio and felt that he was needed more as a pastor there and had to postpone his scholarly aspirations for sometime in the future. Les, this is the future. Now is the time.

What a richness of insights he has gathered and what has this struggle in the inner-city made of him? He has a keen eye on the process of a church and his in depth perception of people has left an impact on me to follow him and try to analyze and appreciate his method.

Very much of what I heard here from Bill Webber and Robert Woodson has been personified and practiced by Les Schulz many years already. And if you haven’t heard about him these thirty years, then it’s like Johnny Ray Youngblood said, he was where Christ was, hanging out in the ghetto.

I ran 14 programs in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Coney Island, New York and three more in St. John’s Lutheran in Oakland, CA. I’m not sure how many Les Schulz ran in First Lutheran, Cincinnati. I imagine it was over thirty. I learned how to run these programs from Les and I was the bus driver for three of his programs as well as for many of mine. When the program was going right, you could feel yourself grow!

For example, the latest:

34. „Aller Anfang ist schwer.” (”All new beginnings are difficult.”)

35. „Mit Sorgen und mit Grämen und mit selbsteigner Pein

lässt Gott sich garnichts nehmen, es muss erbeten sein.“

(„With groans and self castigation, we won’t get anywhere with God. We’ll only receive it by prayer.”)

This is a beautiful Paul Gerhardt verse from his song: „Befiehl du deine Wege.” Charles Wesley has a translation of some verses of this song in the old red Service Book and Hymnal, # 579, but not of this verse. What is so daunting in Gerhardt’s verses is the acrostic, where the first word of every verse reads:

“Commit your way to the Lord, trust in Him, He’ll do it all.” Psalm 37:5.

To work on it a bit:

“With groans and heavy grieving, self-torture and despair,

we will not be receiving, what God only grants by prayer.”

36. „Studiere nur und raste nie, du wirst es nicht begreifen. Ende alle Philosophie, ist dass wir galuben müssen.”

(Keep on studying and do not rest. But after all our Philosophy we end up having to believe.)

37. Wer einen Pfennig nicht ehrt, ist einen Taler nicht wert.” (”Whoever doesn’t value a penny will also not be worthy of a dollar.”) I thank Priscilla for this one!

“After me the deluge! What does it matter?” 09/16/2008

“Après moi le déluge”

The hurricane down in Galveston, Texas did a big number on the poor people there and our prayers are that God helps them recover and quickly restores their power, shelter, and livelihoods. Amen.

That the decimation of New Orleans and the southern states to its East, is now followed by such devastation to the West in Texas and the other states, shows that our weather has become much more violent because of global warming: the devastating Galveston flood in the turn of the last century, not-with-standing, because an interval of a hundred years is different from one of three years. (There were other great storms between the Galveston Flood of 1900 and Hurricane Ike of 2008, the Okeechobee Hurricane of 1928, for example. So that last statement may not be true. I cannot find two great disasters so close together, however.)

In the Science Times (9/16/2008, pages D-1 and 4) the naturalists in the Mohonk House in New Paltz, New York, about 90 miles north of New York City, have been taking weather and other measurements for 112 years. In that period the average temperature has risen 2.7 degrees; of the top ten warmest years in that time, seven have occurred since 1990. The annual precipitation of both rainfall and snow has increased and the growing season has increased by ten days. There is no significant increase in the length of the frost-free season, nonetheless, there were significantly more days without frost.

I can’t believe the way in Los Angeles, in a coffee hour after a church service, just for breaking the ice and starting a conversation, I brought up global warming. The little group turned their back on me. I couldn’t believe it!

There have been times before when we have had small ice ages and warming thereafter, for example, from 1550 to 1850 winters in early modern Europe and North America were colder and glaciers advanced. But the human factor involved today is underscored by the rate of change by which the global warming is taking place. It is not progressing over the course of thousands or millions of years, but by decades. That fact faces humanity with a momentous challenge for our collective lives on this little planet and we had better get it together and get together with a meaningful response or we will be in real trouble.

Our churches should not drag the feet of Christ and remain part of the problem. When I mentioned global warming in a sermon in Old Zion, Philadelphia, a fellow asked me furiously if I was trying to split the congregation or drive everyone away. Conservative Evangelicals have seen the stewardship issue involved in taking collective responsibility for climate change, while conservative Lutherans, from my experience, have not yet done so. (Despite my two experiences, other Lutheran conservatives may already have grappled with the gravity of the issue.)

It is a mistake to play off economic concerns against environmental ones. The principle that needs to be attained is sustainable economics and not short-term, irresponsible economics. Like old Louis the XV of France said, “Après moi le deluge.”[1] The sky is not the limit in this realm, the way it is for love, hope, and forgiveness. These factors in the climate of the human heart, should really have no limit, but over-fishing is unsustainable, when factory fishing boats take out more tonnage of fish than the tonnage of their number that the fish can reproduce. That makes one species after another go extinct and then whole industries and cities have gone down the tubes, when the codfish, for example, in New England, was gone.

There is a lake in Mexico, where a friend of mine grew up. They had all made their livelihood around it by fishing. Now the water was all polluted with factory, industrial, toxic chemicals. As he ordered fish in a restaurant, he asked if it came from the lake. “Don’t worry.” he was told. “The fish we serve comes from Vietnam.” What’s wrong with this picture? What an impoverishment! What is the natural and human capital that industrial capital does not take into account? When I fished for horn pout in the Merrimac River as a boy, you could not safely eat the fish. If with your hands you touched the black water of the river, they smelled like chemicals.

When economics ignores its abuse and remains irresponsible to the environment, economics will always lose and the environment will win. Without the principle of sustainable economics, it’s like saying, “Après moi le deluge!” Well, now the floods are hitting while we are still around, quite literally.


[1] What does it matter? The flood will hit when I’m no longer around!
